Restrictive Practices

Supporting Participants with Dignity, Choice and Safety

At Aroona Care, we are committed to supporting participants in a way that promotes their human rights, dignity, independence, and quality of life. We recognise that restrictive practices should only ever be used as a last resort and when all other positive and proactive strategies have been explored.

Our approach is centred on person-led support, positive behaviour support principles, and compliance with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Practice Standards and Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements.

What Are Restrictive Practices?

Restrictive practices are interventions that restrict the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability. These practices may only be implemented when they are deemed necessary to prevent harm and are authorised in accordance with relevant legislation and NDIS requirements.

Restrictive practices may include:

  • Environmental restraints
  • Physical restraints
  • Mechanical restraints
  • Chemical restraints
  • Seclusion

Aroona Care understands the seriousness of implementing restrictive practices and is committed to reducing and eliminating their use wherever possible through positive and evidence-based support strategies.

Our Commitment to Positive Behaviour Support

We believe every participant deserves support that enhances their wellbeing while respecting their rights and choices. Our teams work proactively to understand the underlying causes of behaviours of concern and to develop strategies that improve outcomes for participants.

We focus on:

  • Understanding the participant’s individual needs and goals
  • Promoting independence and skill development
  • Reducing triggers and environmental barriers
  • Enhancing communication and social inclusion
  • Building the capacity of support networks
  • Implementing proactive and least restrictive approaches
  • Collaborative Approach

Aroona Care works closely with all stakeholders involved in a participant’s support to ensure safe, effective, and compliant service delivery.

We Collaborate With

  • Positive Behaviour Support Practitioners
  • Participants and their families
  • Guardians and decision-makers
  • Support Coordinators
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Medical Practitioners
  • NDIS Providers
  • State Government Restrictive Practices Units
  • The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Through regular communication and coordinated planning, we ensure that all support strategies are implemented consistently and in the participant’s best interests.

Reporting and Monitoring

Where a restrictive practice is in place, Aroona Care maintains robust monitoring, reporting, and review processes to ensure compliance and participant safety.

Our reporting responsibilities include:

  • Accurate documentation of restrictive practice use
  • Incident reporting in accordance with NDIS requirements
  • Collection of data to monitor effectiveness and trends
  • Regular review of support strategies and risk management plans
  • Reporting through approved NDIS and state-based systems
  • Supporting audits and compliance activities

We are committed to transparency and accountability in all aspects of restrictive practice management.

Working with Restrictive Practices Units

Aroona Care works collaboratively with relevant Restrictive Practices Units and regulatory bodies to ensure all authorisation requirements are met and maintained.

Our team supports the implementation of approved behaviour support plans and assists in ensuring:

  • Appropriate authorisation processes are followed
  • Documentation remains current and compliant
  • Restrictive practices are monitored and reviewed regularly
  • Reduction and elimination strategies are actively pursued
  • Participant rights remain at the centre of decision-making
  • Continuous Improvement

Our staff receive ongoing training and professional development in positive behaviour support, human rights-based practice, and restrictive practice requirements.

We continually review our systems, practices, and outcomes to ensure we provide safe, ethical, and high-quality supports that align with best practice and NDIS standards.

Our Goal

At Aroona Care, our goal is to support participants to live meaningful, connected, and fulfilling lives while safeguarding their rights and wellbeing. Through collaboration, positive behaviour support, and a commitment to reducing restrictive practices, we help participants achieve greater independence, inclusion, and quality of life.
